Breast Cancer Awareness is more than a Pink Party

October 11, 2010

Breast Cancer Awareness

I love pink more than most people, so I’m totally in my zone during the October pink frenzy in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

I thought this article by Heather Moore titled “Beware Corporate Pinkwashing” was so on target though.  It reminds us that many companies have good intentions, but there are also companies who will take advantage of the “pinkwashing” trend, and are actually selling products that are dangerous or harmful to us.  For example, the article notes that “Earlier this year, KFC even sold its Kentucky Grilled Chicken, which is known to contain carcinogens, in pretty pink buckets.”

Besides reminding us to be aware that not all “pinkwashed” products are pretty and good for us, I think it’s really important that the article reminds us to focus on what the risk factors are for breast cancer, and how we should keep that in the front of our minds right now; as much as we love pink and love supporting the pink cause.  Here’s what Heather says:

Numerous studies have shown that women who eat mostly fruits, vegetables, and soy foods are much less likely to develop breast cancer than women who eat meat, eggs, and dairy products. National Cancer Institute researchers have found that women who eat meat every day are nearly four times more likely to get breast cancer than those who don’t.

Other leading researchers in both America and Asia concur that women who eat a typical Western diet – high in meat, fat, and sugar – face a higher risk of breast cancer than women who eat a typical Asian diet, which is high in soy and vegetables. Renowned nutrition expert Dr. Dean Ornish reports, “In Japan and other countries where the consumption of animal fat is much lower, breast cancer is rare.”

Eating fatty foods, animal protein, and heavily processed foods can boost one’s risk of breast cancer and other diseases, while eating plant-based foods can lower it. Plant-based foods are typically low in saturated fat and high in fiber and phytochemicals, which knock out carcinogens and fight inflammation. Going vegan can even help women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer beat the disease.

Studies also show that vegans are nine times less likely to be obese than meat-eaters are, and maintaining a healthy weight is key to preventing breast cancer.

What can we do?  First, go read the rest of the article.

Pink Ribbon Diet

Second, order this book: The Pink Ribbon Diet: A Revolutionary New Weight Loss Plan to Lower Your Breast Cancer Risk which focuses on a plant based olive oil  (PBOO) diet. The PBOO diet concentrates primarily on foods that can lower the risk of breast cancer or prevent its recurrence, while omitting foods associated with risks.

So, my take-away from Heather’s article is that while I adore the plethora of pinkness, I should be alert to pinkwashing.  And most importantly, I need to remember that Breast Cancer Awareness Month isn’t all about the pink as much as it is about avoiding this disease as far as it is in our power to do so!  That starts with eating a plant-based diet that is low in meat, fat, sugar and processed foods.  We can do that!

Review: DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

October 4, 2010

I have grumpy skin.  You know the kind.  Let down your guard for about 3 seconds and you get a breakout.  Or two!

Some people – like LilSis – have happy undemanding skin that’s perfectly satisfied being casually swiped with a facial cleansing wipe and going on its merry way.

Did I get that low maintenance skin?  Oh, heck no!  I’m on the other end of the spectrum.  My grumpy skin demands to be clean clean clean…deep cleansers and exfoliators are not an option or an occasional treat.  They’re a must.

It takes a whole regimen to keep my skin clear:

  • Serious Skin Care’s Glycolic Cleanser
  • Serious Skin Care’s C-Clean Cleanser
  • MAC Volcanic Ash Exfoliator (sadly it is a limited edition product and is not currently available)
  • Origins Modern Friction
  • Clarisonic

I talked about some of these products in a Sister Showdown on Skin Cleansers a while back, but these products are so incredible I think they deserve another mention.  Let’s start at the top with DHC Deep Cleansing Oil and Pure Soap.

DHC Cleansing Oil

I’ve been using the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil and DHC Pure Soap for years and years, and always come back to it.  Why?

  • It works!  This oil cleanses more deeply than any other cleanser I can think of. Plus your skin feels incredibly soft afterward.
  • It’s gentle; there is none of the scratching or scraping that you can get from some scrubs.
  • It’s so simple!  It contains olive oil and vitamin E and rosemary leaf oil; not a long list of artificial this and fake that.
  • It’s economical.  It only takes one little pump to clean your whole face, so a 6.7 ounce bottle lasts a long long time, and costs only $25.
  • DHC does not conduct animal testing.

To use Deep Cleansing Oil, I just dispense one pump into my palm, and apply to dry skin with my fingers.  I massage it around for a minute or so, and then add some water to make it slightly foamy.  I remove it with a wet washcloth, and then use the bar of Pure Soap to cleanse quickly with wet fingers to make sure there is no oil left behind. Rinse well and behold your clean skin!

I know what you’re saying…”BigSis, I have oily skin and there is no way that I’m putting MORE oil on it!”  I thought exactly the same thing since I have oily skin too.  It hasn’t been a problem whatsoever though.  Just remember, you’re washing it off.  You’re not sleeping in it.  And there’s something magical about the way oil dissolves makeup, dirt and dirty pores that makes it worth a try!

Guess what? I’m not the only one who loves this Deep Cleansing Oil! I just heard that Valerie Bertinelli thinks DHC Deep Cleansing Oil is magical too and tells Prevention Magazine that it’s a beauty must-have!  I’d agree with that!

Dr Oz: Eat to Prevent Alzheimers and Cancer

September 28, 2010

I talked a while back about how much I love the Dr. Oz Show, and how much I learn every time I tune in. I saw two shows recently that I thought contained amazing information, and I want to tell everyone I know about it, starting with you!

I bet we would all agree that Alzheimers and cancer are two of the most dreaded diseases we can imagine. What if your diet alone could help prevent them from attacking you and your loved ones?

According to these two episodes of Dr. Oz, there are foods that can do exactly that.  Read on!

Dr. Oz said that when autopsies are done on 40 year old women who die in car accidents, 40% are found to have microscopic breast cancer cells. By the time we’re 70, 100% of us have cancer cells in our bodies.

So, what makes those common microscopic cells grow into a menacing tumor? Blood supply. It’s called angiogenesis; when blood capillaries grow and feed the cells so they can multiply at a sometimes alarming rate.

A study conducted by Dr.William Li has shown that certain foods do have the ability to impair angiogenesis.  The anti-angiogenesis foods include:

  • Bok Choy
  • Cooked Tomatoes
  • Artichokes
  • Flounder
  • Strawberries
  • Green Tea
  • Chocolate
  • Cinnamon
  • Soybeans

Now how about Alzheimers disease?  It runs in our family, and LilSis and I will do just about anything to keep it from attacking us. Dr Oz says that we need to add these brain-boosting Alzheimers-fighting foods to our diet:

  • Lentils
  • Chia Seeds
  • Brazil Nuts
  • Coffee

I already eat most of these things, but the rest are going to be integrated into my diet (except for flounder since I’m not a critter eater).  Now…how do you cook bok choy?

Urban Decay Primer Potion…in a Tube!

September 15, 2010

A while back, LilSis showed us how much Urban Decay Primer Potion is left inside the cute little genie bottle even after you think it’s empty.  I heard from an Urban Decay rep at Ulta one day that the owner of Urban Decay was committed to her purple genie bottle even though lots of us girls are grumbling about the waste it causes.  Her solution was to give us a bent wand, which may work a bit better but lots of us are still grumbling.

Urban Decay Primer Potion Tube

Guess what, we now have a breakthrough!  Urban Decay Primer Potion in a tube!

For $29, you get .85 oz of Primer Potion, compared to .34 oz in the genie bottle for $18.

I can’t wait to grab a tube of this.  I apply the Primer Potion with my ring finger anyway, so the applicator isn’t necessary in my world.

Lest we forget, let me take this opportunity to remind you how much I love Urban Decay Primer Potion.  I’ve tried several primer products, and this is my absolute favorite, hands down.  Why?  A normal day in my life is why:

  • Makeup application with Urban Decay Primer Potion at 6 am
  • 8 hours of stressful work
  • Errands in 100 degree temperatures with 100% humidity
  • 2 sweaty workouts
  • Makeup removal at 10 pm: eye shadow is still perfectly intact!  No creases.  No fading.  Voila!

Bonus: this is a vegan product.  No animal testing, and no animal-derived products.

Run, don’t walk, to get your tube.  Just don’t get in my way!

Cruelty-Free Shopping: 1st Update

Lil Bunny

Do I want to be responsible for hurting this littl bun bun? Oh, hell, no!

A little over a month ago, I made a commitment to purge my household – and my life – of products that are tested on animals.  I heard about the 120 beagles who were rescued on July 4th from a bankrupt testing lab in New York, and was absolutely heartbroken to think that they had never been outdoors, chased a ball or run with other dogs.  They had never been allowed to be dogs; they were just test subjects.

I’ve been vegetarian for 16 years, and 99% vegan for the last 8 months, so it seemed inconsistent that I avoid eating meat, dairy and eggs because I don’t want to be a party to an animal’s suffering, but I’m doing exactly that when I buy my favorite Loreal mascara.  Or Charmin toilet paper.  Or Garnier hair color.

So I decided to get with the program and clean out my house.  Care to know how it’s going?  I’m not gonna lie; it’s a bit tough here and there.  I have these random conflicted conversations with myself…

Maybe I’ll just buy the Charmin toilet paper one more time, then I’ll buy Seventh Generation.

No, you’re a hypocrite. You said you were committed.

I am, but it’s TOILET PAPER for cryin out loud!  I can’t buy crappy TOILET PAPER!  No one will know if I buy it just once more.

You’ll know.  You’ll make one exception, then it’ll be two, then fourteen.  Do it 100% or don’t do it all.

Yeah, but I can’t find a new mascara that I like.  I have to have a good mascara!  You can’t expect me to sacrifice everything!

If you buy that mascara, you’re responsible for poking the wand into a bunny’s eye!  Don’t do it!  Don’t do it!  There are plenty of other mascaras out there that you haven’t tried yet.  Don’t be a quitter.

Well, what about my Clorox Toilet Wand?  Do I have to go back to having a drippy germy toilet brush in my bathroom?

Stop being a baby!  Are you committed to living without contributing to animal suffering, or are you committed to whining?

And so it goes.

To be completely honest, it’s easier to replace some products than others.

  • Method and quite a few other companies make cleaning products that are cruelty-free.
  • The Seventh Generation laundry detergent that I bought is happily cheaper than Tide!
  • I’ve tried 3 mascaras already, and am not in love with any of them, but I have others to try and am confident there is a great mascara out there that is not animal-tested.
  • I found a shaving cream that smells heavenly, like coconuts, and feels like buttah!

On the other hand, I’m having some big challenges.

  • The biggest is with paper products.  I’m pretty picky about the brands of TP, paper towels and napkins I buy; not to mention those, you know – feminine products – and I haven’t found any good replacements for them yet.  There don’t seem to be many options at all to choose from.  Surely, there has to be a solution!  The search continues…
  • I’m also wondering what to do about my Swiffer Wet Jet that I dearly love.  Could there be a way to still make use of it since I already have it, without buying any more liquid or pad refills?  Those things were darn expensive anyway.

As I test more products and find excellent cruelty-free products, I’m going to assemble a list that will hopefully help someone else in my position.  I don’t want to blow smoke at you and tell you this process is a piece of cake, but it’s worthwhile and I’m committed.  Still whining a little now and then, because apparently I’m a much bigger brand-ho than I realized, and I like things the way I like them.  But I’m still committed!  😀

I’m really hoping that some of you will have some suggestions for me!  If you do, PLEASE send them my way and I’ll pay it forward!

Fudgy Wudgy Blueberry Brownies

August 14, 2010

What if I told you I could make brownies without butter? Probably doable, right?

How about without eggs? Hmmm, getting trickier. How will you keep them together without eggs?

Now, what if I told you I made brownies with no eggs, no dairy, AND added blueberries! What?! Get outta here!

Using the Fudgy Wudgy Blueberry Brownie recipe from Veganomicon, that’s exactly what I did. And guess what? They’re awesome!! I took them to the office and actually got good reviews. Even great reviews! And the comments weren’t what you would expect: “I guess they’re ok for healthy brownies, BigSis. Better than no brownie at all”.

Fudgy Wudgy Blueberry Brownies

Fudgy Wudgy Blueberry Brownies

They’re moist, they’re unbelievably chocolatey, and you really can’t figure out what’s different about them. I guess blueberries have such a mild flavor usually, that the brownies don’t scream “BLUEBERRY!!!!”

These guys have 3 chocolates (I used vegan), fresh blueberries, and a whole jar of blueberry spread. Plus the usual suspects: flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, canola oil, vanilla and almond extract,

They aren’t completely without guilt, but at least you get a little fruit with your chocolate.

Super Speedy Mexican Vegetable Stew

August 12, 2010

Being single and eating my biggest meal of the day before noon, it’s really easy for me to skip dinner or to just have a handful of almonds.  I try to eat intentionally though, and skipping dinner doesn’t set me up for a very energetic morning.

I have a solution that works for me, even in the summertime when you don’t automatically think of something warm.  How about a one-pot stew/soup dish that’s inexpensive, nutritious AND super speedy?  I got it for you.  It’s so simple, I don’t even need to give you an official recipe; I can just tell you how to do it in a few words.

Take 5 cans from your pantry, and don’t feel bad that you’re using cans!  You need a big can of fire-roasted tomatoes (diced or crushed), a small can of diced fire-roasted tomatoes with green chilis (similar to Rotel but I think much better!), a can of green beans, a can of red kidney beans and a can of corn.

Vegetable Stew Cans

Open all the cans, and dump both tomatoes into a large saucepan and turn the meat to medium.  Fill the small can with water and add that.  Then add whatever mexican seasonings you like to the tomatoes and simmer for few minutes.  I used garlic powder, cumin, chile powder, dried cilantro, shallot pepper, salt and a touch of dried chipotle.

Bring the tomatoes to a boil, and then add the drained corn and green beans, along with the kidney beans that have been drained and rinsed.  You don’t want that nasty bean juice.  Heat until the vegetables are heated through.  Voila!  You’re done!

I like to serve my stew with dairy-free cheese (Daiya) and sour cream (Tofutti).  My diced tomatoes with chilis were pretty potent so I didn’t even need any Frank’s Red Hot Sauce!

Vegetable Stew Bowl

In this one bowl, you get nutrients from the veggies, plus protein from the beans that will keep you full for a good long time.  Use whatever veggies you have, and feel free to add other goodies like mushrooms, onions, and chili peppers.  Hatch chilis are almost in season and they would be incredible in this.

I’d say this is a much better dinner than a few sorry nuts!  😀

Pink Videos Plus 1 to Download!

August 8, 2010

Hey, LilSis, I know you enjoy Pink’s music as much as I do.  I really like the “Glitter in the Air” video you shared the other day.

I love that one minute she’s irreverent, fun and sassy – even wild –  and the next minute she surprises us with a really touching melancholy ballad.  She doesn’t fit the cookie cutter image of a Hollywood pop star (and doesn’t want to), but I don’t feel that her unique style ever overshadows her talent.  Not hatin’ on you, Lady Gaga, I’m just sayin’. 😀

Did you notice Pink’s tweet on Saturday that gave us a link to a special “Please Don’t Leave Me” video that we can download for free?  Just go to Pink’s video page and use the code PDLM.  I don’t know how long the video download will be available, so you might want to grab it now.  If you want to be notified of future downloads, you can sign up for her newsletter.  I did!

You can also watch some of Pink’s videos online on her video page.  I’ve never seen this one for “I Don’t Believe You” but I love it even though it makes me want to cry!

So, now that Pink’s European Funhouse tour has wrapped up, will she be back in the studio to work on a new album?  “Funhouse” was a great one, but I’ve listened to all those songs a bajillion times now and I’m ready for some new Pink music!
