Beagle Independence Day in New York!

July 18, 2010

Rex the Beagle Learns to Run

Rex the Beagle Learns to Run

Did you hear about the July 4th rescue of 120 beagles from a  New York testing lab that went bankrupt?  Check this video of their Independence Day!

PetsAlive in Middletown, New York rescued the beagles, and got a hand from Best Friends.  Can you imagine 120 dogs who had never been outside, walked on grass, played with a toy, chased a ball, ran, sniffed another dog, walked on a leash, and most importantly…had never been loved?  PetsAlive and Best Friends had to be sensitive to these emotional issues, and also take care of the physical needs at the same time: vet checkups, neuterings and spayings, microchipping, shots, etc.  Then they had to find homes – good homes – for all of these guys.

As of last Friday the 16th, only 15 beagle babies were still looking for their new home.  If you think you might have one of those homes, you can still go to PetsAlive and fill out an online application.

Once all 120 of these beagles are safely placed in loving homes, what else can we do?  We can make sure that we DON'T support animal testing.  If we commit to only purchasing products that are NOT animal tested, then the testing will stop.  If we're endorsing animal testing by buying those products, then animals like these beagles will continue to suffer.

Who DOESN'T animal test?  It's simple to find out.  Go to caringconsumer.com and search for specific companies, or click on “Companies That Don't Test” and “Companies That Do Test” to see printable lists.

You might be surprised to see that some really large, well-respected companies still animal test: Dial, Johnson & Johnson, Loreal, Max Factor, Bic, Clorox, Clairol, Procter & Gamble, Pantene, etc.  It's disappointing.

The good news is that there are lots of companies who do not animal test, and they aren't a bunch of hippy-dippy companies with low-quality products: Almay, Arbonne, Aveda, Bare Escentuals, Bath & Body Works, Bobbi Brown, The Body Shop, Caldrea, Calvin Klein, Clarins, Clinique, Essie, Estee Lauder, Jolen, L'Occitane, Lush, MAC, Norelco, Ojon, OPI, Origins, Paul Mitchell, Pureology, Stila, Trader Joe's, Urban Decay, Victoria's Secret, Whole Foods 365 House Brand, and hundreds more.

I'm committing to research all of the things I buy, and then I'm boycotting any company still on the testing list.  How about you?  I don't want the suffering of more beagles, primates and bunnies on my conscience.

For more information on the beagle rescue, check PetsAlive press page.

Urban Decay Naked Palette

July 13, 2010

I missed out on Urban Decay's Alice in Wonderland kit a while back, and I'm still mad at myself for dawdling on the purchase, so when I locked eyes with their new Naked Palette, I was NOT going to disappoint myself again.  The minute I got the email from Urban Decay announcing their new fall catalog, I raced to the site and saw this palette.  The rest is history!  My credit card was snatched from my wallet so fast that it's numbers were spinning, and within a minute – literally – my order was in.

Urban Decay Naked Palette Exterior

The exterior of this Urban Decay Naked Palette would be even more beautiful without the cat hair embellishment! Just wait til you see the inside though...

The next morning, I saw a tweet from Urban Decay confirming my intuition…the Naked Palette sold out in a matter of hours, and as of today, it's still out of stock.  The good news?  It isn't a limited edition palette to the extent that the Alice one was, so it IS expected back in stock.  My recommendation?  Sign up for the email on UrbanDecay.com to be notified when it's back, and then make a bee-line to get yourself one!

Why am I getting all-Lady-Gaga about this palette? Just look at it:

Urban Decay Naked Palette Interior

12 gorgeous colors AND 2 eyeliners AND a primer!

Can you believe these colors?  You get a whole wardrobe of eyeshadows in one slim package: neutrals for work, shimmer for evening (maybe shimmer for work if your workday is more sparkly than mine), and some deeps for smoky eyes.  You also get a double-ended 24/7 eyeliner pencil with Zero (black) and Whiskey (a brand new beautiful brown), and a travel-size Primer Potion.

I've kept my little mitts off this palette until I got a photo of it, so I haven't tried any of the colors yet.  LilSis and I are both in love with our Summer of Love palettes though, so I know the quality of Urban Decay shadows is fabulous and I can't wait to play with these.  I think these are incredible colors for blue eyes like LilSis and I have, but I can also see them being equally gorgeous on brown eyes, green eyes, hazel eyes, and black eyes.

I'm going to show you some swatches of these colors later on – with and without our favorite Primer Potion eyeshadow primers – so you can get an idea of what they look like.  Meanwhile though, sign up for that email and if you get the chance, buy one of these palettes! I promise I paid full price for my palette (a steal of a deal at $44) and I'm not making a dime if you buy one.  I just don't want you to be disappointed when your friends get one, and you kick yourself for not listening to me!

Funfetti Firecracker Cupcakes

July 11, 2010

Funfetti Firecracker Cupcakes

I didn't even know that they still made Pop Rocks until a few weeks ago when a friend of ours brought them out at the end of a party. (Yes, we tend to get a little silly sometimes.) These little popping candies bring back some fond childhood memories for me so when I stumbled across Noble Pig's Firecracker Cupcakes recipe with Pop Rocks, I knew that I would be making them soon.

By the way, Noble Pig's Firecracker Cupcakes garnished with blueberries and raspberries are the most gorgeous cupcakes that I've ever seen!

I made my simpler version, Funfetti Firecracker Cupcakes last Sunday for our 4th of July Party but in all the excitement of getting ready for the party, I didn't get photos taken of that batch. So, I decided to make them again since these fun cupcakes don't have to be made exclusively for the 4th of July. They could bring a bang to any holiday or birthday celebration.  What kid doesn't get a kick out of of Pop Rocks? (And most adults love them, too!)

Note: I don't do a lot of baking from scratch, so this is my easy, breezy, simple way to make these cupcakes.

Funfetti Firecracker Cupcakes
(adapted from Noble Pig)

One Pillsbury Funfetti Cake Mix
3 eggs
1/3 c. oil
1 c. water
Pillsbury Whipped Supreme Cream Cheese frosting
One 1.75 oz Betty Crocker Rainbow Mix sprinkles
Assorted colors of Pop Rocks
Various candies or fruit

In a large bowl, add the cake mix, eggs, oil, and water and mix for two minutes on low mixer or whisk by hand for two minutes. Fold in the candy sprinkles. Line cupcake pan with baking cups and fill with batter. Bake at 350 degrees until done. If the cups are filled 2/3 to the top, the cupcakes should take 18-22 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool completely before frosting.

I prefer to fill the baking cups almost all the way to the top so they take between 22-25 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

Funfetti Firecracker Cupcakes

When you're talking about cupcakes, a muffin top is a good thing!

I could actually enjoy one of these cupcakes just like this without the frosting, but decorating these cupcakes is where the fun comes in!

Funfetti Firecracker Cupcakes

Frost the cupcakes or pipe on the frosting as I did and then sprinkle the tops with various flavors of Pop Rocks. I found a variety pack at Walgreens that contained one of each flavor: Strawberry, Watermelon, and Tropical Punch.

(I thought the Watermelon flavor in the green packet would turn out to be green Pop Rocks, but they were also pink like the Strawberry flavor.)

Pop Rocks

To achieve a good firecracker effect, sprinkle the Pop Rocks on just before serving. The moisture is what makes the candies pop, so they will start popping immediately.

How's this for a big teenage boy bite?

Funfetti Firecracker Cupcake

It's like a little party of explosions going off in your mouth!

Later this week, I'll be sharing with you another fun Pop Rocks recipe. Ever tried a cocktail beverage with Pop Rocks?

Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller

July 9, 2010

Ever wake up with puffy eyes?

Unfortunately, for me, it's more often than not.

Whether it's from too much sodium, staying up too late, or a bad case of insomnia, most mornings I'm greeted in the mirror by tired, puffy eyes.

What's a girl to do?

Believe me, I've tried a ton of products to try to solve this problem and I've had some okay results with most of the products I've used but I've never been completely satisfied with any of them until now.

BigSis first mentioned the Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller a few months ago after she had been using it for a couple of weeks. When I heard that she had found a product that really worked as it's advertised, I knew that I had to try it. I had been using the Garnier Nutritioniste anti-puff eye roller and I did like it but I couldn't say without a doubt that it worked as well as it should.

I've been using the Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller for over six weeks now and I must tell you that I love it!

Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller

Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller

Olay Regenerist Advanced Anti-Aging Eye Anti-Aging Roller, 0.2-Ounce

I keep my eye roller in the fridge and the first thing I do every single morning is take about 20-30 seconds to roll a little bit of the product under my eyes. (It's quite refreshing when this is applied cold.) This product goes on more creamy than other anti-puffy products that I've used in the past but it soaks in quickly and you can actually see results within a very short period of time. I'd say that within 30 minutes, my eyes are noticeably less puffy! 🙂

We sisters take the “puffy eye” problem seriously and we don't recommend a product unless we have tried and tested it and are 100% happy with the results. So, ladies, if you have this problem, do yourself a favor and try this Olay Regenerist Anti-Aging Eye Roller. I don't think you'll regret it.

Get Your Groove on with Grooveshark

July 4, 2010

Grooveshark

I'm always looking for motivating new songs for my iPod cardio playlist.  As LilSis just mentioned, I also get tired of my tunes really quickly.  I get some songs from old CDs, but most come from iTunes.  The only problem with discovering new songs on iTunes is that you get to listen to such a short snippet of the song, who knows if you're going to like the whole song?  You can pay for a song and then not like it at all.

Here's a solution to that problem…Grooveshark!  Voila!  At Grooveshark, you can listen to songs in their entirety, and even make your own playlists to come back to and listen to time after time.  How is Grooveshark different from iTunes?  You don't download songs and you can't put them on your MP3 player.  You just listen to them online.  You also don't have to pay for using Grooveshark.  If you don't like dealing with ads on the site, you can pay $30/yr for a VIP account, but they don't bother me.

You can search Grooveshark by artist, or by keywords that can be found in a song name or album name.  You can also look at the songs that are most popular with other users at the moment to get some idea of what's hot.

I like to listen to songs on Grooveshark, and then download them on iTunes for my iPod if I like them enough.  It's the perfect marriage of technology!

~BigSis

Tired of your tunes?

July 2, 2010

Even though I have almost 5000 songs on my iPod, I've become completely bored with the songs that I have in my cardio playlist. I bet that I've listened to the same songs thousands of times since I created this playlist a few years ago. This past week, I made it a priority to sit down and take a little time to work on it.

I deleted quite a few that I just can't bear to listen to one more time but I also added some fun new songs to help me boost my workout.  I've become so dependent on my iPod that it's almost impossible for me to workout without it.

Here are a few of my favorites that I've been listening to this week.

“Yeah” by Usher

“Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga

“Even Flow” by Pearl Jam

“All the Single Ladies” by Beyonce

And I absolutely adore these next two songs. Neither are upbeat enough for my cardio playlist, but I can listen to them over and over and over again.

“Just Breath” by Pearl Jam

“Hunger Strike” by Temple of the Dog

I'm trying to be more open-minded when it comes to listening to music that's outside my “norm”.  I could easily get stuck in a 70s, 80s, 90s rut if I let myself, but luckily, having a 16 year old in the house that loves different genres has opened my eyes to some new stuff.

Thanks to BigSis and HayHay for downloading some new tunes for me!

I would LOVE to hear from you if you have some favorite songs that you LOVE to listen to while working out! Just leave a comment or send me a quick email to lilsis at bigsislilsis dot com. 🙂

Have a GREAT WEEKEND!

Vay Cay Mode in So Cal

June 18, 2010

Woo Hoo! It's Friday! It's Friday! I love Fridays!

I know you can't tell, but I'm doing a little happy dance! 🙂

If you've been reading BigSisLilSis for any period of time, you already know that Friday is my favorite day of the week and today is not only a Fantastic Friday, it's a Fantabulous Friday!

SirHoney and I got some fantastic news this week, plus BigSis and SisMama are here in Southern California visiting us, and today, we're heading to the casino! BigSis says she enjoys gambling at online casinos at the moment because you can learn all you need to know about online bonuses and take better advantage of them. I told her we won't be benefiting from many bonuses in this casino, but she was happy enough that we were getting to play some slots. Since we're probably going to be playing penny slots, were not really expecting to hit it big, but we're going to have fun trying! Perhaps we may have to follow this link or find another online casino similar so we can play something a little more thrilling than penny slots, this way we'll have a better chance of hitting it big as well, wish us luck!

On another note, since we were just talking about Man vs. Food, did anyone happen to catch the season premier episode on Wednesday night that was filmed here in San Diego? It was awesome! Our favorite part of the show was when Adam tackled the legendary Ironman Challenge at the infamous Broken Yolk Cafe.

Broken Yolk Cafà© Special (For the Iron man or woman)
A dozen-egg omelet filled with mushrooms, onions, American cheese and smothered with chili and more cheese. On the other half of a 15-inch pizza pan is a generous pile of homefries and two biscuits. The Broken Yolk Special is free if you eat it all within an hour.

Here's a peek at just a couple of their giant four egg omelets. Can you imagine what that 12 egg omelet looks like close-up?

We're trying to talk HayHay into letting us take him to Broken Yolk Cafe to attempt the challenge, so if we make our own Young Man vs. Food video, we'll be back to share it with you. Otherwise, we're in Vay Cay mode here in So Cal and we'll check back in if we have something fun to report.

Have a great weekend! 🙂
