How to Shampoo your Makeup Brushes

September 2, 2009

When was the last time you shampooed your makeup brushes?

I was recently at a MAC counter picking up my favorite loose powder when I decided to ask the Sales Person a quick question about my powder brush. The brief conversation went something like this:

Me: “Do you think that it’s time for me to get a new powder brush if I’m noticing that bristles are falling out and ending up all over my face when I’m applying my powder?”

Sales Person: “No, not necessarily.  When was the last time you gave your brushes a good shampoo?”

Me: “Hmmm… I guess it would be bad if I said never?”

Sales Person: “Yeah. That could be the problem.”

Me: “Oops.” (as I lower my head in shame.)

I proceeded to tell her that I do occasionally use the MAC Brush Cleanser but that no one ever told me that I needed to shampoo my brushes. I asked her a few more questions and bought a few more items so she wouldn’t be so disgusted with me, then I headed home, with my tail between my legs, to shampoo my brushes.

Apparently, most experts suggest cleaning them once a week, but every couple of weeks is better than not at all. Cleaning your brushes more regularly will not only extend the life of the brush but also could prevent some skin problems. Dirty makeup brushes can harbor lots of dirt and bacteria, but frequent washing of your brushes can keep them, and your face, clean and healthy.

It really is simple. Let’s do this step by step, shall we?

Dirty Brushes

Dirty Blush Brushes

First, gather your dirty brushes.

Enjoy Shampoo

And your favorite shampoo.

Wet brush

To get started, wet each brush thoroughly.

Shampoo Large brush

Then, apply one to two drops of shampoo directly to each brush and gently massage the brush in between your fingers or in the palm of your hand. Do this for at least a minute or two to get all the makeup and dirt out of the brush. The bigger brushes should be cleaned one at a time.

Shampoo Small Brushes

But, you can wash a few of the smaller brushes at the same time.

Rinse

Rinse each brush thoroughly. It’s very important that you rinse each brush well so you don’t leave behind soap residue, dirt, or bacteria. You can gently massage the bristles if needed, but be careful not to pull on the hairs.

Pat dry

Remove excess water and pat dry on clean towel. You can gently squeeze the brush in between the towel, if needed.

Drying Brushes

Lay the brushes on a towel to dry overnight. It’s important to lay the wet brushes flat or even pointed down at an angle. Don’t ever stand them up to dry. Some of the water could run into the bottom of the bristles and damage your brush.

Clean big brushes

Take a closer look at these after they were shampooed.

Clean brushes

They look 100% better than the ‘before’ photo!

Check each brush before you use it to make sure that it is completely dry. If the brush is still damp, then don’t use it, and whatever you do, do not use a hair dryer to dry it.

Now, wasn’t that easy? I sure wish that I had known to do this sooner. I can’t wait to use my clean brushes in the morning!

Huh-larious Marshmallow Murder Video!

September 1, 2009

How about a hilarious video for Tuesday?  If your Monday beat the stuffin’ outta you like mine did, you could use a laugh or twelve today!  I like all of the cute kiddo and crazy cat videos, but after a while they all start to look the same.  This video…not the same.  And that’s a good thing!  Trust me; this may be the best video to hit YouTube in years!  It’s certainly the most creative that I’ve seen!  It’s short so give it a watch…I’ll wait…

Did I exaggerate?  If you know of a better video…please send me the link.  Til then, this rules!  I’m watching it again.

Happy Anniversary to Me!

August 31, 2009

I know, it’s silly to play a Happy Anniversary song to yourself, right? I didn’t think I would get serenaded in bed as Wilma did, so I thought I’d play this for myself. I always loved this episode and this rendition of the song totally get stuck in your head. Would it also be bad to look at some anniversary rings for women online and ‘subtly’ show them to my husband to see if a gift may be on the horizon? No? Yes? Let me know!

“Happy Anniversary!”

“Happy Anniversary!”

“Happy Anniversary!”

“Haaaaapppppy Anniversary!!!!

“Happy Anniversary!”

“Happy Anniversary!”

“Happy Anniversary!”

“Haaaaapppppy Anniversary!!!!

Okay..that’s enough of that. Let’s get to the point, quickly, please…

It was 18 years ago today that SirHoney and I said “I do!” I think anniversaries are really special and I’m a little bit of a freak about celebrating them on the actual date, not the weekend before or the weekend after. When it happens to fall on a Monday night, then you celebrate the anniversary on Monday night!

I’m not going to get all sappy, though, because we just did that yesterday in our post about HayHay’s 16th birthday.

Sometimes you can’t help but reflect a little on how your life has played out and how it could have turned out differently if certain situations hadn’t occurred.

I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and every thing is as it is supposed to be at this moment. If I hadn’t met SirHoney, my amazing step-daughters and stepson would not even be a part of my life, I wouldn’t have my three adorable grandsons, and HayHay would NOT even be here.

Basically, we’re happy, healthy, still in love, and grateful to have five wonderful children, who are happy and healthy, and three healthy grandsons that we totally adore.

Honestly, what more can you ask for?

Sweet Sixteen

August 30, 2009

Happy 16th Birthday, HayHay!

Is it okay to call a boy’s 16th Birthday Party a Sweet Sixteen? Probably not, huh? My little baby is 16 today and he is a sweetheart, but I guess I can’t do the whole Sweet Sixteen birthday party theme.

When I asked him what he wanted to do for his birthday, I got the same answer that I get every year. He doesn’t want a big party with tons of friends and doesn’t care to got out to eat somewhere expensive.  He just wants to have his closest friends over for swimming and a cookout, so that’s what we’re doing today.

I just mentioned a couple of weeks ago how it seemed like HayHay grew out of his bunk bed overnight. This may sound ridiculous, but ever once in a while when I see my handsome, six foot tall young man from a distance, I can’t believe that he’s my little baby boy.

Where did the years go?? This photo was taken when HayHay had just turned one year old and it seems like it was yesterday.

Baby HayHay

Baby HayHay

And, no, he never went on to become the next Mozart, even though he does look like a child prodigy in this photo.

My hormonal roller coaster is in tenth gear right an  I can barely even write this with a quivering chin and tears rolling down my face. (I know, it’s signs of peri-menopause! Lucky me!) But today is NOT about me, even though I am the one that gave birth to him. 🙂

Today is about HayHay! I’ll keep this short and sweet because if I start reminiscing about when he was a baby or a toddler or even how sweet he was when he was in elementary school, I’m going to be boo-hooing too hard to even type.

My little boy has grown into such a nice, handsome, sweet, polite, caring young man. He has a great sense of humor, has great friends, loves animals, has a great relationship with his brothers and sisters, makes good grades, and manages to participate on both the junior varsity and varsity HS Golf Teams and the HS Surf Team. Basically, he’s just a good kid.

We’re just really proud of our young man and wish him a Happy, Happy 16th Birthday!

Lord help me when he goes off to college!! I already know that I’m going to be a mess! It’ll be the first time in our entire married life that we haven’t had any children in the house!!

I’m going to go dry my eyes and turn this over to BigSis to see if she would like to say a few words…

Note from Aunt BigSis…

Oh, well, that’s just great!   Thanks for getting me all emotional, LilSis!  I know he’s your little boy all grown up, but he’s always been my little buddy, just like his brother Big T has always been.  I can’t believe he’s SIXTEEN!  When did this happen??  It seems like yesterday that I was holding his hand crossing the street, or babysitting him, or just having him spend the weekend with me.

I have so many memories of spending precious time with HayHay: going to Schlotsky’s and sitting in our spot, him finding Baby Gaby for the first time, choosing AshyPoo to be “our” cat at the Siamese Rescue, going to Maui twice, making him pasta shells with butter and parmesan forever, smelling the Aveda Confixor in his little spiky hairdo before church each week with him carrying his little Bible.

There are so many memories, and there are new ones being made, but BOB SAGET; it has just gone too fast!  Remember how he used to write the name of the church worship leader in chalk on the driveway because he looked up to him so much?  And how cute he was at his kindergarten graduation in the little blue cap and gown?  And how adorable he looked in that tiny tux when he was the ring bearer at his cousin’s wedding?  Ok, I have to stop now.  I’m killing myself with this walk down memory lane.  It’s more bittersweet cuteness than I can stand.

HayHay Kindergarten Graduation

HayHay Kindergarten Graduation

I agree 1000% that little HayHay has grown into an awesome young man.  I have to admit that I do miss little HayHay because my last little buddy is grown now, but I look forward to the future with big HayHay!  Happy birthday, HayHay!  You’re awesome and we love you to pieces!

Update on “The Cove” and the Dolphins

August 29, 2009

Before I say anything else, can you even imagine in your wildest nightmares that someone could viciously stab these beautiful animals to death?  That they could grab one of these babies and slit its’ throat?  What kind of human being can do that?  What kind of human beings are we if we KNOW that’s happening and we don’t throw the biggest international hissy fit known to man until it freakin stops?

Back on August 14th, I talked at length about the Japanese dolphin slaughter that’s been taking place every year, which was just brought out into the light in “The Cove” documentary.  I’ve been keeping up with the developments since I saw the movie and wanted to give you an update.

  • The city of Broome, Australia has had a sister-city relationship with Taiji since 1981.  They just severed all ties with Taiji because of the dolphin slaughter. Bravo, Broome!  We already loved Australia, but now we do even more!
  • The dolphin drives usually start on September 1 (this Tuesday), but Rick O’Barry thinks Taiji may delay it a little because of the current publicity.
  • The Mayor in Taiji has said that all residents have to be tested for mercury poisoning (from hair samples).  Since dolphins are 5000 times as toxic as Japanese law allows, people are being saved as well as dolphins.
  • If you’d like to see more detailed information, there are several videos available of live chats with the Director of “The Cove”, Louie Psihoyos.

For more information and to help end the slaughter of these dolphins, go to any of these links and join the fight:

http://thecovemovie.com/

The links are also in the right sidebar in the Animals section under BigSis’ Favorite Links.  Let’s keep doing everything we can do…it’s making a difference but there’s a long way to go!

Just think with me for a second.  If Taiji did NOT conduct their annual dolphin slaughter this year – from September to March – 23,000 dolphins would live instead of suffering a horrendous death.  That’s 23,000!  Please help!

Fried Tomato Sandwiches with Pesto and Goat Cheese

August 26, 2009

Being vegetarian, a tomato sandwich in the summertime is one of my staple meals.  Great whole grain bread with mayo, and locally grown tomatoes.  Plus a good dash of salt and Penzeys shallot pepper.  Avocado, pickles and lettuce are optional.  Ah, but there’s another kind of tomato sandwich out there. Let me explain.

Take a nice thick slice of GOOD tomato…do NOT use the crummy pinkish faux tomatoes that the grocery stores try to pass off on us.

Add a thick schmear of goat cheese with a spoonful of pesto mixed in.

Top with another thick slice of tomato.

Roll in seasoned flour, then egg, then panko breadcrumbs and saute til golden brown.

Sprinkle with salt.

Gobble down.

Rinse and repeat.

Are you with me?

I heard about this idea from a tomato recipe contest the Washington Post conducted.  Last year’s winner used this method, but included bacon (I don’t eat Babe), Boursin cheese instead of the goat cheese and pesto, and Italian breadcrumbs instead of the panko.  Besides my pesto version, you could also use a dollop of the Hatch Green Chile and Garlic Goat Cheese that I did a couple of days ago.

Fried Tomato Sandwich with Pesto and Goat Cheese 1

Helllooo, my darling Sammie.

Fried Tomato Sandwiches with Pesto and Goat Cheese
(adapted from Mary Joe Sweeney’s winning recipe)

1 large ripe tomato
1 nice thick chunk of goat cheese
1 Tblsp pesto
Flour, well seasoned with salt and pepper
1 egg, lightly beaten
Panko breadcrumbs
Olive oil or canola oil for sauteing

Core the tomato and slice it into 4 even slices.  Mix the pesto into the goat cheese.  Add half of it to one slice of tomato, and top with another to make a sandwich.  Repeat with the rest of the goat cheese and the 2 remaining tomato slices.  Dredge in the flour, then the egg, and then the breadcrumbs.  Saute in oil until golden brown, then carefully flip and lightly brown the other side. Remove from heat and immediately salt the sandwiches. Drain briefly on paper towels, and serve hot.  Makes 2 sandwiches.

Like LilSis’ little baby quiches yesterday, this is a recipe that allows you to do whatever you want with it.  Use any soft cheese you like, but remember that if it’s not soft and gooey, it won’t get melty before the tomatoes get yukky.  Add in olives, herbs (chives would be good), garlic, scallions, anything you can think of.  A little shredded parmesan would be good mixed in with the breadcrumbs too.

Mini Asparagus Tomato Quiche Cups

August 25, 2009

Quiche1

Have you ever bought the little frozen mini quiches for a party when you’re in a real pinch for an appetizer and don’t have any time to make them from scratch? Actually, I’ve had to do that a couple of times, but I would much rather serve homemade appetizers. I guess I could compare myself to a baking from scratch snob that doesn’t like cake mixes; I don’t really like store bought appetizers.

If I think back to my childhood days, I may love appetizers as much as I do because SisMama and D always had cheese, crackers, and sardines or chips and dip out for us to snack on before dinner. I always loved that and still do! SirHoney’s mother doesn’t believe in appetizers before dinner because it could spoil your appetite. (Party Pooper!) You might even get your hand slapped if you try to steal an olive off of the relish tray before you sit down to dinner.

To this day, I prefer to go out and share a couple of appetizers for dinner versus ordering a full entree. And, I’d much rather host an Cocktail & Hors D’Oeuvres Party instead of a sit-down dinner party.

For some reason, I’ve never made mini quiches myself.  Yesterday, I was in the mood to do something a little different, plus I was hungry and didn’t want to wait almost an hour for a full size quiche to bake, so I decided to make these. And, I always make my quiche crustless, so the mini cups were also crustless.

Since I wanted these quiche cups to be bite size, I used the mini muffin pan instead of the regular size muffin pan. I browsed the Internet a little bit to peek at some recipes, but I didn’t find anything that ‘blew my socks off’, so I ended up just throwing this together. I saw that a lot of the quiche cup recipes used muffin baking cups but I didn’t see a reason to use those. I just wanted to pop them in my mouth right out of the tin instead of having to remove them from a baking cup.

And, since I was hungry, I got in too big of a hurry and forgot the Frank’s Red Hot that I had intended on adding. (I even had it sitting out on the counter.) I was also going to add some cracked pepper and maybe some shallot pepper but I totally spaced and forgot that too.  🙁

You could vary these ingredients and add ham, bacon bits, spinach or broccoli instead of asparagus, onions, chives, basil, etc.  This is EXACTLY the kind of recipe that I LOVE! You can make it your own and use whatever you happen to be in the mood for that day without worrying that you’ll screw it up! The quantities are not exact and luckily, it doesn’t matter!

These got the ‘thumbs up’ from BigT and HayHay, who both happened to be standing by waiting for them to come out of the oven! You could actually pop the whole little cup in your mouth, but if you happened to bite it in half, here’s what you would find!

Closeup Quiche2 (1)

Mini Asparagus Tomato Quiche Cups

3 eggs, beaten
3/4 c. grated cheddar cheese
1 small tomato, peeled, seeded, and chopped
12 stalks grilled asparagus (tips cut off and the stalks chopped)
1/4 c. or so of chopped leftover sauteed mushrooms
Pam Cooking Spray

Spray the muffin tin with Pam. Beat the eggs in a small bowl and add the cheese, tomato, chopped asparagus and mushrooms. Stir until blended well. Ladle the quiche into the muffin tins. (I used an ice cream scoop to prevent a mess.) This quantity perfectly filled up the 12 mini cups. Place an asparagus tip on top of each filled cup. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

It doesn’t get much easier than that, does it?

Hatch Green Chile and Garlic Goat Cheese

August 24, 2009

The Hatch Green Chile Festival is in full swing! If you haven’t gone “Hatch Crazy” before, now is the time! What’s the big deal about the Hatch Green Chiles? They are green chiles that are only grown in Hatch, New Mexico. They are delicious, and they’re only available for a short time each year. Here in Texas, we’re already hot and spicy so when Hatch time rolls around, we go nuts!

You can do a million things with these flavorful peppers. I wandered through Central Market the other night amidst the Hatch Green Chile frenzy, and they were sampling these things in the store:

  • Hatch Green Chile Monterrey Jack Cheese grilled in sourdough bread (unbelievably scrumptious)
  • Hatch Green Chile Pesto wrapped up in a tortilla with mild sliced roasted peppers
  • Hatch Green Chile Cheese Bread

They also had these items all made with Hatch Green Chiles: tortillas, tortilla chips, sausages, hamburger patties, hamburger and hot dog buns, chili con queso, popcorn, twice-baked potatoes, and meatloaf!  So apparently there isn’t anything that a Hatch Chile can’t do!

I decided to use some of my roasted pepper stash in a goat cheese spread. I’ve been buying a Hatch Green Chile Goat Cheese from a little local goat farm for the last couple of years, but sadly they recently went out of business so I made my own easy version.  I used the mild variety of the peppers, so please check the heat level of your peppers and adjust the quantity you use in this recipe if yours are hot.  Trust me!  The hot ones are hotter than heck, and if you use a whole 1/4 cup of them in this recipe, your hair will absolutely be on fire!  Not to mention other parts of your body!

Hatch Green Chile and Garlic Goat Cheese

Hatch Green Chile and Garlic Goat Cheese

Hatch Green Chile and Garlic Goat Cheese

4 garlic cloves, crushed (I used 6 cloves cause that’s how I roll)
1/4 cup roasted and chopped mild Hatch Green Chiles
Olive oil for sauteing
8 ounces goat cheese
Dash of Frank’s Red Hot Sauce
Pepper to taste

Saute the crushed garlic in the olive oil over low heat for a minute or two, but do not brown.  Add the chopped chiles and saute for another 30 seconds.  Add to the goat cheese, and mix to blend well.  Add the Frank’s Red Hot and pepper to taste.  Serve with crackers or crudite.

Whatever your pepper pleasure is, make sure to take advantage of these peppers while they’re in season!
